Spices - Black Seeds (Nigella Seeds)

Nigella Seeds (Nigella Sativa) come from an annual flowering plant of the Ranunculaceae family. The plant grows to 20–30 cm in height. Nigella seed is obtained from the plant's fruit which is big and capsule-like. The fruit contains three to seven united follicles, each containing a number of seeds. Nigella Seed goes by many names, such as black caraway, Roman coriander, black cumin, and kalonji, among many others. Nigella Seed has a pungent-bitter flavour and smell. It is sometimes used as a substitute for black cumin.

Uses: Nigella seed's shiny texture and pleasantly nutty flavour make it a popular dressing spice for cookies, pastries and salads. It is also traditionally used as a topping for flatbreads in Southwest Asia and the Middle East. It is one of the five ingredients in a popular Indian spice mix called Panch Phoran (a mix of five spices). It is also used in liquors and in certain cosmetic products. It has been used for centuries in the treatment of a range of ailments such as pink eye, food allergies, the flu, colic and congestion.
