Edible Nuts - Walnuts

Walnuts are hard-shelled fruits of the walnut tree, which belongs to the Juglandaceae family. The edible seed, or the kernel of the fruit are within the hard walnut shellsenclosed in a brown seed coat which is rich in antioxidants.More than 90 percent of Walnuts consumed today are English Walnuts (J. regia), which are preferred for their pleasant taste and thinner, easier-to-crack shells. Other Walnut species include the California Black Walnut, butternuts, and the Arizona Walnut. The Walnut seed is rich in proteins, dietary fibre and antioxidants.

Uses: Walnut seeds are available both with and without shells. Walnut kernels are eaten whole, roasted, or used as an ingredient in food recipes, or as part of a mix such as muesli. It is also used to heighten the taste of coffee and cakes. Walnut oil is a popular ingredient that is used for salad dressings. Walnut butter made from raw or roasted forms can be used a healthy and delicious substitute for regular butter. Walnut is rich in antioxidants and hence is also used in alternative forms of medicine to treat cardiovascular disorders.
