Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a perennial plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. This tropical plant is usually three to five feet tall that has flowers of dull yellow color. Turmeric is obtained from cylindrical, aromatic rhizomes that grow higher up the branch of the plant and are gathered annually.
The turmeric plant is native to SouthIndia. It needs temperatures of around 25°C and abundant rainfall to grow. These rhizomes are boiled, dried in ovens and ground into an orange-yellow powder that is commonly called turmeric. It is used a spice primarily in Indian cuisines and various other purposes such as dyeing and traditional medicine. Turmeric has an earthy, pungent flavor and a mustardy smell.
Uses: Turmeric is mostly used as a curry powder in food recipes. It is also used in canned beverages, baked products, ice cream, dairy products, yogurt, biscuits, popcorn color, cereals, and sauces, etc. Turmeric has proven anti-inflammatory properties and is being evaluated for medicinal effects in ailments such as arthritis, cardiovascular disorders, and diabetes.
