Edible Nuts - Dates

It is a flowering plant which is cultivated for its sweet fruit.They have been used as a staple food in middle east and Indus Valley for 1000 of years. The name of "date" originally came from Greek word "daktulos" because of the fruit elonagted shape. They are oval cylindrical in shape with 3 to 7 cm long and 2 to 3 cm in diameter. Dates can be easily grown from seed in which 50% of seeding will be female. Dates are riped in four stages, popularly known as kimri, khlal, rutab and tamr.

Uses: They provide wide range of nutrients and are very good source of dietery potassium . It has 80% of sugar and also contains protein, fiber, boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, magnesium, maganese, selenium and zinc. Dates can also be used as stockfeed after mixing it with grain. Dates are also useful for women who are in the final weeks of their pregnancy as it has positive effects on labour.
