Nutmeg is the seed of a tropical, evergreen tree, the MyristicaFragrans. The tree grows to about 65 feet in height and yields its first crop of fruit eight years after sowing. The nutmeg fruit is pendulous shaped, and splits in two when mature revealing a crimson-coloured mace, which has the nutmeg at the centre.
The fruit shell is then broken to pick out the nutmegs. Nutmeg is roughly egg-shaped and about 20 to 30 mm long and 15 to 18 mm wide, and weighs between 5 and 10 gram when dried. Nutmeg has a moderately sweet flavour and a pungent fragrance. Usually, Nutmeg is used in powdered form.
Uses: It is used in ground form to flavour many kinds of baked goods, confectionary, puddings, sauces, vegetables dishes. The essential oil obtained from nutmeg is used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.
