Cloves (SyzygiumAromaticum family) are the unopened pink flower buds of the clove tree. The clove tree grows up to 8–12 m in height. The flower buds are picked by hand when they are pink and dried until they turn brown in color. Cloves are about 1.5-2 cm long and 0.25-cm in diameter. Each clove consists of a long calyx, four sepals, and four unopened petals that form a small spherical bulb in the centre. The hard exterior of cloves contains an oily compound mainly comprising a chemical compound called Eugenol that marks their distinct flavor and aroma.
Uses: Clove is traditionally used as a spice in the cuisines throughout Asia, Africa, and South America. It is also used for traditional medicinal purposes throughout the world as well as in the preparation of some toothpastes and local anesthetic for gum inflammation. Eugenol, the primary component of Clove Oil is known and used for its anti-inflammatory properties in traditional Chinese and Indian medicines.
